Inspire Part 1
Session One at Emeth Gymnastics is well under way! Because we believe in Building True Character Through Gymnastics, we have a specific character quality that we emphasize during each session. This session we are focusing on the quality of “Good Sportsmanship”.
The poem that our students are learning is:
There will always be athletes ahead of me;
There will always be some behind.
I will encourage each one I see,
Keeping my attitude positive and kind!
I believe that the first step to being an athlete who demonstrates good sportsmanship is recognizing and accepting that no matter what level of accomplishment you are at in your sport, there will always be people who are farther ahead of you, and there will always be people who are not as advanced. Even gymnasts who win World Championship and Olympic competitions have peers in the sport who are better than they are in certain areas.
Once you understand this reality, learning how to encourage both the athletes who are better than you and the ones who are not as advanced is what truly makes you someone with good sportsmanship. At the same time, being someone who looks for ways to build up the athletes around you and make them feel better about themselves keeps YOU personally motivated in a positive way to keep working hard and getting better!
Our theme verse for the session goes along with the poem by reminding us to focus on encouraging others:
1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Encourage one another and build each other up”
In the weeks to come, I encourage you to take some time to memorize the poem and the verse with your child, and talk about ways that they can encourage ALL of the athletes around them, no matter who they are or what they are learning!
