Level 3 state vault champion Ronee Collins had a rough start to her morning the day of the meet. She woke up with the stomach flu. “She was so sick and so tired,” says her mom, Stacy. “She insisted on going ahead with the meet, but I wasn’t sure how she was going to do it.”

“I’m not sure where the strength came from,” laughs eight-year-old Ronee. “I just focused and did my best. When they called my name for state vault champion, I was so glad at first. After I came down off the podium, all the tiredness came right back.”

Twelve-year-old Emma Traggai returned to Emeth with two state champion medals – one for bars and one for all around. “I was so happy when I found out I was all around champion,” says Emma. “I thanked God and was so excited.”

This season started out rough for Emma. “At my first meet I fell off the beam and barely managed to finish my routine without crying,” recalls Emma. “I didn’t place at all. I put my ribbons on my mirror where I would see them every day to remind myself that I didn’t want that to happen ever again.”

“You just don’t decide one day that you are going to win,” continues Emma, who has been state bars champion for three consecutive years. “It’s definitely not easy. It’s what you do at practice every day, every week, and every month that gets you there.”

Ten-year-old Maria Hammerle was surprised when she was announced as the state floor champion for Level 5.  “I had been working hard with Nikki practicing my back extension. She helped me so much!” recalls Maria. “I was so excited that my hard work paid off! My parents were excited for me too. They are proud.”

Maria isn’t taking time to rest. She is now focusing on her next goal of moving up to Level 6 this June.  “I need to get these routines down so that I am ready to perform them for the judges this summer.”

Congratulations to all ten of Emeth’s state champions, and to all the young ladies who represented Emeth at the state meet last weekend!
