How to Prepare Your Child For Their First Gymnastics Class (7 Helpful Tips)
You’ve enrolled your child for their first gymnastics classes. Now what? Toddlers will likely be in a parent and me class and your little one will feel quite secure. If they’re older, however, their emotions could range from super excited to super nervous. Either way, these tips will help both you and your child be well-prepared for the first big day. Gymnastics classes for kids should be fun and a highlight of the week. Making that first day a positive experience will set the stage for what follows.
7 Tips That Prepare Your Child For Their First Gymnastics Class
1. Meet the Instructor or Coach
If possible, visit the gym, take a tour and meet the instructor ahead of time. This is the best way to calm any anxiety your child (and you) may feel.
2. Watch a Class in Progress
This will give your child a heads up on the format of the class. Gymnastics classes generally follow a similar structure, but there may be some variations. Watching the class beforehand will reduce anxiety and create more excitement.
3. What to Wear
Comfortable clothing that allows for free movement but is not baggy is best. This goes for the parent of a tot as well. You may be surprised at the amount of exercise this turns out to be for you!
- Girls: Leotards with or without gymnastics shorts are best. Shirts that stay tucked in or fit snugly are also acceptable. Avoid baggy shirts and the embarrassment they might cause when they flip upside down!
- Boys: Form fitted shirts or t-shirts that will remain tucked in and athletic shorts are ideal. Baggy shirts are not recommended as it can be difficult for instructors to spot kids safely.

Gymnastics is a hard sport. It takes a tremendous amount of strength, character and years of practice to reach high levels. Let your child know ahead of time that they may not be at the same level of development as others in their class. It’s not about comparing, it’s about individual progress.
The instructor is there to assure that each student is improving. This does not mean that each student is always at the same level. Failures will happen. Learn from them, keep pushing forward, don’t give up. This is how character is formed. The character development gymnastics classes offer prepares them for adulthood.
5. What to Bring to Class
Find a gym bag, back pack or drawstring bag. Write their name on it and pack the following:
-
water bottle with name on it
-
extra hair ties
-
hand wipes
-
snack for longer gymnastics classes or for afterward
-
extra leotard or shorts – just in case!
6. Hair and Jewelry
Girls and boys with long hair must have it securely tied back. Hair in the face is a danger to them and to a coach when spotting.
Remove any jewelry. Necklaces and earrings can be another safety issue. No one wants to be pierced by a sharp earring when running across the floor!
7. Arrive on Time
Make it a point to leave plenty early. Rushing out the door and being late for class drives everyone’s anxiety level up. It also reflects poorly on the new student who interrupts a class already in progress. Remember: you want that first experience to be fun!
These seven tips and your own enthusiasm will have your child eagerly awaiting the big day. Gymnastics class will soon become one of the most fun days of the week!
